You're invited to join WA’s political analysis webinar on Tuesday 21st July, as Andy Burnham sets out his agenda and approach as Prime Minister.

We will be joined by Jen Gerber, WA Senior Political Advisor and former Special Advisor to Andy Burnham, who will draw on insights from more than seven years working with him in the last Labour Government; together with Steve Richards, Chair of WA’s Advisory Board and one of Britain’s most respected political commentators, authors and broadcasters, and Sir Philip Rutnam, WA Advisor and former Whitehall Permanent Secretary.

Chaired by WA Founding Partner Marc Woolfson, our discussion will examine the direction Andy Burnham sets out in his first hours in government, and the ideology and ambition driving his decisions – including:

  • The key team entering Downing Street and No.10 North, new Cabinet and Special Advisor appointments, and the wider network of thinkers shaping the new government’s agenda.
  • How Whitehall delivers a transition of power, and how new Ministers set out their agenda within departments.
  • The mood across the Labour Party, and how Burnham will build relationships with new Parliamentary colleagues.
  • How devolution, new thinking on fiscal policy, and a focus on democratic renewal might ‘rewire the state’.
  • The policy priorities likely to define the opening weeks of the new government – including plans on work, skills and opportunities; regional growth; the cost of living; transport and infrastructure; and public service reform.
  • Burnham’s communication style, and how organisations should position themselves and can best engage with the new government.
  • The broader political environment and immediate electoral contests, from Nigel Farage’s Clacton campaign, to the race for the Greater Manchester Mayoralty.
  • Key moments during the first six months of the new government – including Parliament’s return in September, Labour National Executive Committee elections and the selection of a new General Secretary, Party Conference, and an Autumn Budget.
  • What Burnham’s focus on ‘fairness’ and emphasis on communities means for businesses.
