We are looking for a paid intern to support a project to take a delegation of UK MPs to the UN climate summit, COP30. This is an exciting opportunity for students or recent graduates with an interest in climate change to work with our team from late summer to early November. The internship will be paid London Living Wage and transport allowance. The post is based in London with no requirement for international travel.
What you will do
In November, ECIU is taking a cross-party group of UK MPs to Brazil for a programme of meetings and events at COP30. This post will work to support planning, briefing and logistics for the Belém programme, as well as support to deliver in-person events with delegate MPs in Parliament beforehand. Whilst the post-holder will not be required to go to Brazil, we want you to be in post whilst the delegation is at COP, (12-14 November).
Depending on the intensity and timing of work on the COP programme, there may also be capacity to work to support other ECIU projects with analysis, communications, planning and logistics support, and digital outputs.
What you will learn
- Experience how a small team works to achieve impact;
- Pick up skills and knowledge for a future career in or around our sector;
- Where possible, we would try and ensure you are involved in a specific, discrete piece of work in one of our programme areas – UK energy, transport, food and land-use, international, and politics – for your CV.
Requirements
We are looking for potential more than for experience, offering this role as a learning and development opportunity to kick-start your future career.
You should have:
- An interest in climate and energy issues in the UK and/or beyond;
- An interest in and some understanding of UK politics, and the political and economic context in which delivery of net zero sits;
- Enthusiasm for, and preferably some experience (whether in employment, personal or academic context) of qualitative analysis (e.g. literature review);
- Effective and straightforward communication skills – a willingness to pick up the phone and get stuff done;
- Willingness to work in a team, and independently, seeking guidance and support where needed, and working to deadlines;
- Ability to be innovative and creative, motivated and able to work across issues, and with people at any level;
- Attention to detail and accuracy.
It would be a bonus if you had:
- Some experience of planning and organising events;
- Some understanding of the UK media and social media space.
We value diversity and inclusion and are keen to make our sector more welcoming and accessible to a greater diversity of backgrounds. We welcome applicants from groups currently under-represented in our sector, including: people from a Black, Asian or other minority ethnic background; people from a socially or economically disadvantaged background; people who consider themselves to have a disability.
You must have the right to work in the UK.
Hours/Duration
This post is funded for a total of 280 hours. Our preference is that this is worked as three-four days per week between August and November, but we are flexible within and immediately around our normal office hours of 9am-5pm, Monday to Friday. The only fixed point would be to ensure you finished no earlier than the end of the week commencing 10th November.
Location
We envisage that the internship will take place at our offices near Borough tube station in central London, with flexibility for hybrid home/office working. There will be support with transport costs.
