The Refugee, Asylum and Migration Policy (RAMP) Project is looking for a new person to join the team to serve as a policy adviser to Tim Farron MP and Lord German working 2-3 days per week at a day rate of £250 per day. The adviser will be seconded into the office of Tim Farron MP from RAMP, which is a cross-party project with advisers currently working with Chris Murray MP, David Simmonds MP, Olivia Blake MP, Tony Vaughan MP, Baroness Lister, Baroness Mobarik, Lord German, Lord Rees and the Bishop of Chelmsford.
Key responsibilities
- Providing briefings to parliamentarians on refugee, asylum and migration legislation, debates and policy discussions.
- Drafting speeches, articles, parliamentary questions and amendments.
- Arranging opportunities for the parliamentarians to meet with those with expertise on asylum and immigration policy
- Where appropriate, contributing to internal policy discussions within the Liberal Democrat party on relevant policy issues.
- Working with the other RAMP advisers to identify opportunities for cross-party interventions, particularly around the RAMP priority themes of citizenship and inclusion, asylum, and economic migration.
- Working with other RAMP advisers to provide secretariat support to the All Party Parliamentary Group on Migration.
- Meeting with other parliamentarians, with NGOs, think tanks and other organisations working on refugee, asylum and migration policy to identify possible parliamentary interventions.
Person specification
We are looking for an organised, self-starter with the following experience, knowledge and skills:
- Good previous experience of working within the UK Parliament and of parliamentary procedure.
- Demonstrable experience working in a policy or public affairs role and a good understanding of the policy-making process.
- Strong knowledge and understanding of refugee, asylum and migration policy issues.
- Sympathy with and understanding of the priorities and objectives of Tim Farron MP and Lord German particularly regarding refugee, asylum and migration policy.
- A highly proficient writer, with experience of drafting of writing letters, articles, parliamentary questions etc.
- The ability to think and act strategically, to react quickly to fast-changing events, and to clearly set out options to a parliamentarian.
- The ability to build strong relationships quickly with a range of different stakeholders.
