Religion and Human Rights in Europe
The European Parliament UK Office is organising a debate to mark the awarding of the Sakharov Prize. The debate will address religious and human rights and will bring together academics, policy-makers, interest associations and journalists. It is open to the public and is hosted jointly with UCL European Institute.
How can we respond to religious difference and treat all citizens fairly? As individuals in the EU we have the right to hold religious beliefs, we enjoy freedom of thought and conscience. But how we can practice these freedoms - through worship, teaching, symbols or dress - is more and more contested.
Tensions between individual minority rights and common values have been at the forefront of many recent religious freedom cases. Rulings by the European Court of Human Rights show how sensitive religious rights are.
Speakers
