This is an exciting position in an influential local government organisation. The District Councils’ Network (DCN) represents the diverse interests of our 167 member councils to central government. District councils in England deliver 86 of the 137 essential local government services to over 20 million people.

DCN helps its member councils in their valuable work through numerous conferences, in-person or virtual events, written bulletins, networks and lobbying activity.

The Events and Engagement Officer plays a key role in making all of this work happen. You will have frequent exposure to council leaders and chief executives, as well as senior civil servants, Government ministers and MPs. It is a great position for someone seeking a local government career with the chosen candidate having significant scope and freedom to develop their capabilities within the role.

This role is based in Westminster, London.

The Job

This is a busy job, in which you will be the first point of contact for DCN, providing timely and effective communication with our membership and partners. You will lead on the coordination of events, including identifying venues, managing logistics, overseeing delegate attendance and developing event programmes. You will ensure the smooth running of our regular engagement meetings, provide professional business and administrative support to senior DCN figures and help build and maintain councillor and officer networks. You will also assist with the management of DCN’s finances.

The Person

We’re looking for an ambitious, well-organised and highly motivated individual with a track record showing they can work both collaboratively and through using their own initiative to overcome an array of challenges. You will be good at balancing competing priorities.

You are highly likely to have had experience of organising events and of administering an office or organisation.

You’ll have excellent oral and written skills and a track record of working collaboratively with a wide range of figures. You will have excellent IT skills, including in relation to Word, Excel and PowerPoint.

The Benefits

The DCN is an equal opportunities employer and has flexible working practices:

  • Generous annual leave entitlement;
  • Opportunity to join the Local Government Pension Scheme;
  • Incremental pay award (awarded annually in April after one year’s service).
