There are currently over 8 million smokers in England. The government are committed to cutting this number by the end of 2015 through a variety of means and this important event will provide attendees with the current policy context of this important public health issue and also the best ways to reduce the number of people smoking in the future.
This important event will focus on:
- Preventing avoidable deaths through stop-smoking schemes
- Assessing the success of stop-smoking campaigns
- The importance of adopting an evidence based approach to stop smoking
- Supporting young people to stop smoking or stop the take up of smoking
- Linking up public health and stop smoking services - making every contact with primary and secondary care count
- Tackling illegal tobacco trade
- Protecting maternal health - Stop smoking services during pregnancy

Martin Dockrell - Director of Policy & Research at Action on Smoking
Martin Dockrell is Director of Policy & Research at Action on Smoking and Health. He has an enduring research interest in the user perspective of public health services and this has led to a particular interest in smokers’ views. Martin has worked in public health for 25 years in local government, the NHS and the voluntary sector. He was involved in harm reduction projects for injecting drug users in the 1980s and harm reduction in sexual health in the 1990s. Martin is a Fellow of the Royal College of Public Health
Michael Holden - Chief Executive, National Pharmacy Association
Michael Holden read pharmacy at Portsmouth School of Pharmacy. He was awarded a BSc Pharm in 1976 and did his pre-registration year with Boots in Southport, Lancashire Following a number of years in various management positions, Michael established his own small community pharmacy group in Hampshire between 1988 and 2002. He then set up a consultancy to support the implementation of change in community pharmacy before working for Pharmacy Alliance at UniChem between 2003 and 2005. In 2005 he was appointed Chief Officer of the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Local Pharmaceutical Committee. During his time with the LPC, Michael was actively involved in the expansion of community pharmacy services, the development of the Healthy Living Pharmacy initiative. He is a member of the Public Health Leadership Forum for Pharmacy, the Pharmacy Clinical Leadership Network, and the Primary Care Clinical Leadership Network. Michael was appointed Chief Executive of the National Pharmacy Association in January 2011. Michael is married with three daughters and lives in Hampshire, England.
