Looking to influence what regulation looks like for UK insurers?

We’re looking for Policy Adviser, Conduction Regulation to influence regulatory change that will shape the UK and international conduct regulation of the insurance industry. You’ll genuinely make a difference and tangibly see how you guide and effect policy across a large section of the industry.

Some of your key priorities will be responding to Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) work and consultations on retirement outcomes, pensions strategy, with-profits products and the UK financial advice regime.

Your role:

The core part of your role will be to formulate and communicate persuasive policy positions, supported by robust evidence, that promote the interests of insurers in relation to conduct regulation issues.

Day to day you will:

  • Lead and contribute to policy development work with members, including providing proactively and efficiently managing working groups/committees and seeking input from across the industry;
  • Monitor the development of FCA initiatives in coordination with colleagues across the ABI;
  • Lead the ABI’s approach to specific FCA and Government policy projects;
  • Work in partnership with the European and International Team to influence the development and implementation of relevant EU regulatory initiatives;
  • Work with colleagues in the Policy Directorate to develop the ABI’s policies and member offer on insurance issues with a regulatory dimension;
  • Actively develop and maintain relationships with a network of key contacts including member companies, FCA, EU regulators and decision-makers, government, other trade associations and consumer organisations.

The role is based at the ABI, located in the City of London. However, some travel both within the UK and Europe may occasionally be required.

Where can this role take you?

Wherever possible, we support our staff to develop their careers internally. The next natural step for you in this role would be a Senior Policy Adviser or Manager – either in this team, or another in the business – but this is flexible and depends on your own ambitions.

With a supportive environment and the fantastic exposure you get to lots of people in the industry and the knowledge you’ll build on a range of regulatory and policy issues, the ABI is a great place to develop your career.

What training and benefits are offered?

On your first day you’ll be met by our HR team for a full company induction. You’ll then have inductions to get you up to speed with anything from events to how our finances work, plus one to ones with relevant advocacy and policy colleagues. Everyone goes on the CII Introduction to Insurance course and will receive plenty of on the job training. We host various Staff Learning Events throughout the year and you will be able to attend relevant ABI and industry events.

Additional training will be driven by your own personal needs and ambitions and we have a range of courses as part of our Learning and Development offering.

More detail on our company benefits can be found here.

We’re looking for:

You’ll be comfortable handling various member priorities and chairing meetings with your various stakeholders. An engaging, persuasive and friendly communication style will stand you in good stead, both with your stakeholders and colleagues. An ability to negotiate is also highly valued. Alongside this, you’ll also need excellent analytical skills and be able to digest complex policy information quickly and make it accessible for others.

We’re equally open to an assistant looking to step up as we are to a more experienced adviser but an understanding of the insurance market and the ability to adapt to and influence different stakeholders are vital. Ideally, you’ll also have a good insight into UK and/or EU legislative, political and regulatory environments.

About us:

The ABI is the voice of the UK’s world leading insurance and long-term savings industry. A productive, inclusive and thriving sector, we are an industry that provides peace of mind to households and businesses across the UK and powers the growth of local and regional economies by enabling trade, risk taking, investment and innovation.

As the leading trade association for the insurance industry, we have an Associate Membership proposition for different stakeholders, many of whom are non-insurers. We recognise how important our relationships are with many non-insurers, so we have developed a proposition for different stakeholders to give them Associate Membership of the ABI with the services on offer reflecting their different interests and perspectives.
