Established in January 2002, PubAffairs is the premier network and leading resource for the public affairs, government relations, policy and communications industry.

The PubAffairs network numbers over 4,000 members and is free to join. PubAffairs operates a general e-Newsletter, as well as a number of other specific group e-Newsletters which are also available to join by completing our registration form.

The PubAffairs e-Newsletters are used to keep members informed about upcoming PubAffairs events and networking opportunities, job vacancies, public affairs news, training courses, stakeholder events, publications, discount offers and other pieces of useful information related to the public affairs and communications industry.

CAMRA is a not-for-profit consumer group with over 173,000 members that has been operating since 1971. Our vision is to have quality real ale and thriving pubs in every community. We are a volunteer-led organisation, with a small, enthusiastic and committed staff team of forty people working at our Head Office in St. Albans where this role will be based. Our membership is growing at 9% per annum.

  • We are independent and our policies and campaigning objectives are set by our membership;
  • CAMRA’s decision making process is wholly independent of any commercial companies or other organisations;
  • We are not-for-profit and all proceeds are put back into achieving our campaigning objectives;

Job Purpose

To shape and lead the delivery of CAMRA’s public affairs activity so that CAMRA has the best possible chance of achieving our campaign objectives of securing greater support for pubs and real ale. The Senior Campaigns Manager will also line manage the CAMRA Campaigns Officer and CAMRA’s Policy and Research Officer.

Key Responsibilities and Functions

Job Specification:

  • Assessing potential legislation, developing policy positions and public affairs plans for consideration;
  • To manage and lead on delivery of all aspects of CAMRA’s public affairs activity aimed at influencing the Westminster Government;
  • To support on the delivery of all aspects of CAMRA’s public affairs activity aimed at influencing the devolved Governments and the European Union;
  • To provide extensive support to CAMRA members and branches to assist them in establishing strong relationships with their local elected representatives. To include training sessions and written guides;
  • Manage the production of CAMRA’s policy submissions to Government;
  • Planning and evaluation of all CAMRA’s public affairs activity;
  • Producing briefing papers and reports as required;
  • Managing CAMRA’s Parliamentary databases;
  • Ensuring effective parliamentary monitoring takes place;
  • Supporting CAMRA’s Communications team to respond to media enquiries on policy and political developments;
  • Representing CAMRA at a wide range of events and meetings including meetings with Ministers, civil servants and MPs;
  • Event organisation – including a full programme of parliamentary events throughout the year and co-ordination of visits to CAMRA events;
  • Support for CAMRA’s volunteer committees as required;
  • Leading and supporting the policy and research work undertaken by the Policy and Research Officer including work to influence local government;
  • Leading and supporting the work of the Campaigns Officer to assist local communities wishing to register their pubs as Assets of Community Value;
  • To deputise for the Head of Public Affairs as required;
  • To undertake additional campaign related activity as necessary.

Person Specification

Essential

  • Demonstrable interest in campaigning;
  • Degree level education in a related discipline ideally including a focus on British politics;
  • Theoretical and practical understanding of how Government works;
  • Theoretical and practical understanding of legislative processes and how these can be utilised to support campaigns;
  • Substantial relevant paid work experience in a campaigning, public affairs, political or parliamentary environment;
  • Experience of leading or being part of a campaign whether paid or unpaid;
  • Experience of organising events;
  • Aptitude for producing accurate and high quality online and offline communications, campaigning material and briefings;
  • Highly articulate with excellent literacy skills;
  • Ability to understand and interpret legislation and produce briefings on the legislative impact;
  • Experience of working in a role involving substantial campaigning, parliamentary or lobbying activity;
  • Experience of line management and motivating team members.

Desirable

  • Experience of working with volunteers;
  • Research experience;
  • Passion for community pubs and real ale;
  • Understanding of how local Government works.

This role will require regular attendance at meetings and out of hours events in the evenings and occasionally at weekends for which there will be time off in lieu given.
