PLMR, the PR Week Top 50 and Top 10 public affairs agency, has appointed former DESNZ and DHSC communications Director James Sorene as a strategic adviser, starting today.

Until last year James served as Director of Communications at the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ), where he led a team of 90 communications professionals and advised ministers and senior officials on major issues including energy security, net zero and the transition to clean energy, helping to establish the new Department, lead communications through a change of government, and chairing the cross-government Clean Power Mission communications board.

He previously served as Director of Communications at the Department of Health, where he played a leading role in the UK's COVID-19 vaccine rollout. During the Coalition Government, he was official spokesman and Head of Communications to Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg. Earlier in his career he worked in the Home Office Press Office on crime and counter-terrorism issues, including in the aftermath of the 7/7 terrorist attacks.

Outside government, James was Chief Executive of BICOM, where he led the organisation's research programme, building relationships with think tanks and journalists in the UK and internationally. He was a regular commentator on broadcast programmes and speaker at policy conferences in the UK and US.

At PLMR, James will advise PLMR’s client base on strategic communications, reputation and public affairs, drawing on extensive experience across politics, policy, media and business – with a particular focus on supporting the growth of its energy and health offer.

His arrival is part of PLMR’s ongoing strategy to boost its expertise and high-quality service to clients, and reflects the expansion in its consultancy team.

Commenting on the hire, PLMR’s Head of Energy and Sustainability, Patrick Cousens said: “James brings outstanding credentials, strong relationships and a clear understanding of the government machine – including most recently within DESNZ. He has overseen multiple high-profile communications operations across government, and we are thrilled to be expanding our team with someone who will add clear value to our fantastic and expanding client roster.”

James Sorene, Strategic Adviser at PLMR, added: “It is a real privilege to be joining PLMR at such a critical time in UK politics. PLMR has an impressive service offer and client base, and I am very excited to bring my skills and experiences to contribute to the ongoing success of the business.”
